There are two main airports that service Rome (from a tourist and a commercial point of view alike), namely, Fiumicino (or Leonardo da Vinci) Airport and Ciampino (or Giovan Battista Pastine) Airport. While Fiumicino is a major port of call for both national and international or intercontinental flights, Ciampino Airport is a smaller landing venue used for long as a military airport. However, in time, Ciampino has become a civilian airport too, in particular due to the fact the tourist opening of Rome has increased dramatically, plenty of airline companies operating flights to the capital of Italy and exceeding the capacity of the greater Fiumicino.
The airport transfer means are as good as one can possibly conceive: besides the regular trains, tourists can also choose between the many different taxi cabs. Therefore, when traveling to Rome, getting from any of the two above mentioned airports to the city proper is a matter of time, since the landing venues are generously linked to the city by plenty of transport means (public and private alike).
Leonardo da Vinci Airport an international airport located at about 35 kilometers west of the center of Rome, in the small locality of Fiumicino. As stated above implied, this is the largest airport not only in Rome, but in the entire Italy also, being transited each year by tens of millions of passengers. Undeniably, its commercial performances are, to a large extent, owed to its proximity to Rome which, at its turn, is one of the top tourist destinations worldwide.
Leonardo da Vinci Airport is serviced by more than 150 airline companies (Air Italy, Alitalia, Blue Air, Cubana, Lufthansa, US Airways, just to cite a few examples), being the largest hub and headquarters of Alitalia. These airline companies, providing business class and low-cost flights, link Rome (and Italy) to virtually all corners of the world, from Russia and China to the USA, Egypt, India and Algeria.
The airport, however, is not outstanding by its flight connections exclusively. It is one of the best endowed airports in Italy: while waiting for their flights, passengers can go shopping (for gifts, souvenirs, books, electronics even, fashion and the like), or recharge their batteries at one of the many eateries and bars. It is also fitted in order to meet the needs of the people with reduced mobility, in compliance with the regulations in force in this respect. The car rental operators are also at hand, adding to the list of airport transfer alternatives one can choose from in order to reach Rome.
By train
The easiest and most straightforward way to reach Rome from Fiumicino is by train. The Leonardo Express will take any passenger from the airport into Roma Termini, in the very center of the city. The Sabina-Fiumicino route is another choice one could make, especially since the train arrives at every 15 minutes, or – on holydays – every 30 minutes. In order to learn more about the railway connections between Rome and Fiumicino, ticket sale points, ticket prices, duration of a trip and the like, please visit Trenitalia.
By bus
There are four bus line companies in charge with the airport transfer services from Fiumicino to Rome, namely, Cotral, Terravision, Sit Bus Shuttle and Autonoleggio Tirreno. There aren’t too many differences between the services provided by these bus companies, since the price doesn’t vary and the duration of the trip is between 55 minutes and one hour. The buses run approximately every half an hour or so, from Monday to Sunday. The tickets can be bought from the bus driver. For complete information on the trips offered by each of the companies, follow the indications below:
Cotral
Terravision
Sit Bus Shuttle
Autonoleggio Tirenno
By taxi
For a fee of about 40 euros, a taxi could take up to four passengers and their luggage to any point inside the city walls. However, if the tourist desires to go to any other place, the price will be indicated by the taximeter found in each taxi.
The taxis are white, with easy-to-see license numbers on the doors and inside. Thus, they are easy to spot. Understandably, a taxi trip to Rome is much more expensive than a bus trip, but for the sake of rapidity and of an enhanced feel of privacy, the cost is worth paying.
Rome Ciampino Airport (or, in other words, Giovan Battista Pastine Airport) is the second most important Roman airport. Even so, Ciampino absorbs most of the low-cost airlines companies’ traffic (EasyJet, WizzAir, and the like) between Italy’s cities, while also receiving tourists from across all Europe. Taking into consideration the fact that this used to be a military airport, it should not surprise anyone that Ciampino only receives about 5 million passengers each year.
Ciampino used to be the most important airport to service Rome. Yet, from the opening of Leonardo da Vinci, it lost its importance. Understandably, the airport is not so well endowed as it counterpart in Fiumicino, but the basic facilities are present (facilities and services for people with reduced mobility included). Car rental operators can also be spotted here, as well as taxi stands which make it possible for passengers to get to the city of Rome once they land at the airport. The main advantage in respect to covering the distance between the capital and Ciampino is the airport is located only 12 kilometers from the center of the city, which, of course, is highly convenient for tourists in search of less expensive airport transfers.
From Ciampino to Rome tourists can use most of the means available for covering the distance between Fiumicino and the capital. Taxis are, of course, available, as well as car rental companies.
By train
In terms of public transport means, trains are a solution at hand, since from the airport the passengers are shuttled directly to Roma Termini (the trip takes around 15 and 20 minutes). In order to learn about the train schedules, ticket sale points and the like, visit Trenitalia.
By bus
Cotral, Terravision, Sit Bus Shuttle, which also provide transfers from Fiumicino to Rome, have conceived lines which make the connection between Ciampino and the capital. In order to learn about the bus schedules available at each of these companies, use the information featured above.
